Dear Saints and Friends of Grace & Trinity,
This Sunday is the First Sunday in Lent

The letter to the Hebrews says, “*For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin*” (Heb 4:15). This Sunday we begin our Lenten journey focused on this High Priest who is tempted by Satan as we are, yet He remains without sin for us. While He does offer us an example of refuting Satan’s lies with the clear word of God, He does much more than that. He is “*the Prince of life, who died*,” and yet “*reigns immortal!*” (LSB 460:1). He is the victor over sin, death, and the devil. Thanks be to God! *Join us at 8am at Grace and 11am at Trinity to see the beginning of this “combat stupendous” that ends on the cross.*
*Bible Study this week is at 9:30am at Grace. *This week we’ll take a look at some of the Lenten practices and disciplines that Christians adopt both at home and at church. Join us!

*Other things…*
· *Lenten Disciplines… (We’ll discuss these in Bible Class on Sunday)*
o *Fasting*: here’s a helpful handout on fasting <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=11324835&l=6f904a74-5e83-4416-8527-2c9cdf6cd0c4&r=02e0fe90-5f64-4227-942f-927062d04cce> with loads of Scripture explaining some of the thought behind this.
o *Prayer*: of course, we always pray; however, there is an increased devotion to prayer during Lent, which is why we offer Wednesday evening Vespers services at Grace at 7pm. I’d also invite you to join us for Matins daily at Grace at 9am. During Lent we use this litany <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=11324835&l=ff3b3200-eba4-42b6-a61b-ace50c5f69e0&r=02e0fe90-5f64-4227-942f-927062d04cce>, which you might enjoy making use of at home.
o *Almsgiving*: an increase in generosity during this season—especially for the poor—is an excellent way to prepare ourselves for the cross and resurrection of Jesus. Our midweek offerings will support our Seminarian, Kyle Nelson.
o *Confession & Absolution*: while we confess our sins in a general way every time we pray the Lord’s Prayer, as well as at the beginning of each of our Sunday liturgies, there is also the gift of Private (Individual) Confession and Absolution. This is offered every Friday at Trinity from 4-5pm as well as on Wednesdays at Grace from 6-6:45pm.
o Also, our Lenten custom is to have a light meal prior to our Wednesday night Vespers services. These meals will be at Grace at 6pm.
· Here’s this week’s lecture on Joel, Obadiah, Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=11324835&l=b619f58c-6c75-498a-9fd1-057a09bf7dd7&r=02e0fe90-5f64-4227-942f-927062d04cce>, as well as last week’s lecture on Hosea and Amos <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=11324835&l=330bab5b-a36b-424c-9e00-67f74aae2076&r=02e0fe90-5f64-4227-942f-927062d04cce>, which is MUCH longer than I actually lectured, but includes portions of my previous writing on these two prophets. Enjoy!

*Prayer Requests…*
· Debra Engelbrecht’s surgery this last week went well, successfully removing the tumor. She was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday. Continued prayers for recovery are appreciated.
Thank you all for your prayers while we were gone. We had an excellent vacation as a family–thank you! It’s very good to be back (despite the cold weather!). I look forward to seeing you all Sunday, if not sooner.
Many blessings and much joy to you all in Christ our life.
