Weekly Update for Grace & Trinity

13 August 2021
*Friday of Trinity 10*

Dear Saints and Friends of Grace & Trinity,

This Sunday is
*the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, **Theotokos*
Isaiah 61:7–11; Galatians 4:4-7; Luke 1:39-55 <www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isaiah+61%3A7%E2%80%9311%3B+Galatians+4%3A4-7%3B+Luke+1%3A39-55&version=ESV>

*St. Mary, The Mother of God (**Theotokos**)*
*St. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is mentioned repeatedly in the Gospels and the Book of Acts, with nearly a dozen specific incidents in her life being recorded: her betrothal to Joseph; the annunciation by the angel Gabriel that she was to be the mother of the Messiah; her visitation to Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptizer; the nativity of our Lord, the visits of the shepherds and the Wise Men; the presentation of the infant Jesus in the temple; the flight into Egypt; the Passover visit to Jerusalem when Jesus was twelve; the wedding at Cana in Galilee; her presence at the crucifixion, when her Son commended her to the care of His disciple John; and her gathering with the apostles in the Upper Room after the ascension, waiting for the promised Holy Spirit. Thus she is present at most of the important events in her Son’s life. She is especially remembered and honored for her unconditional obedience to the will of God (“Let it be to me according to Your word” [Luke 1:38]); for her loyalty to her Son even when she did not understand Him (“Do whatever He tells you” [John 2:1-11]); and above all for the highest honor that heaven bestowed on her of being the mother of our Lord (“Blessed are you among women”[Luke 1:42]). According to tradition, Mary went with the apostle John to Ephesus, where she died.** Treasury of Daily Prayer, 625*

*Looking Ahead…*
· *August 23 *begins the new academic year for Newman University. I’ll be teaching an Introduction to the OT this year. With classes meeting at 8am on M, W, F, we’ll not be offering Matins those days. Please make use of the opportunity over at Immanuel at 8:30am until the semester comes to an end in December.
· *August 28* is our Joint-Parish Picnic. We’ll also have an official “visit” by our Circuit Visitor, Pr. Lovett. Please join us at 3pm at Grace and stick around for dinner, drinks, and games. To prepare for the visit, please feel free to fill out this survey <mcusercontent.com/a90ee03ff0810e6c55bae6a58/files/08def2a8-993a-0eb7-0614-a961bb40982f/Questionnaire_for_Laity_Circuit_Visit.docx>. It won’t be collected, but it will help guide the conversation.
· *September 11* – *CLOTHING GIVEAWAY*! On Saturday, from 9a-12p, Grace’s Board of Social Ministry will hold a clothing giveaway. Donations will be accepted and appreciated until the first of September. Please drop off donations at Grace on Sunday mornings, Tuesdays from 9-11a, or you can contact Jennifer Reyes at 316-300-0500 for other arrangements. Volunteers for sorting the week prior are always needed, as is help the day of the event. Please mark your calendars and contact Jennifer with any questions and let her know if you are able to help. · *September 24-25 *is the Annual Men’s Retreat <mcusercontent.com/a90ee03ff0810e6c55bae6a58/files/4deefc14-df15-6b3a-1c62-4a59e5c3a318/Men_s_Retreat_Flier_2021_.pdf> in Herington. This year we’re thrilled to have Pr. Bryan Wolfmueller joining us to talk about martyrdom. Registration is $35, each teenage son you bring is $15. Everyone will get a copy of the book *A Martyr’s Faith in a Faithless World* . (Books are available to those who’ve registered!) Also, if you’d like to ride together in a big van that we rent, let me know!

*Other Things…*
· *Stolen Pickup*: Early Monday morning, about 3:55am, our truck was stolen from our parking lot at the parsonage. The neighbor’s camera caught a video of it, but we can’t read the plate of the other white truck that pulled up to it. A police report has been filed. If you happen to see my beat-up white pickup around town, please let me know. It’s a ’01 white Silverado. It *may* have a round magnet on the tailgate for Concordia Academy and a KDixon vanity plate on the front. The driver-side mirror is gone as well. Thanks! [image: image.png]
· *The Lutheran Witness *is a remarkable resource for your Christian life and witness. Full of short articles, a Bible study, and monthly updates about life in the KS District, this monthly magazine is well worth the $18 subscription! If you don’t already receive this, please let me know and I’ll be sure to include you in our Church’s subscription. Names need to be given to the District by 8/23, so let me know ASAP.
· *Trinity Ladies’ Guild/LWML* will be collecting items for Lutheran World Relief Personal Care Kits until August 22. There will be boxes in the Narthex to put your donations in. If you want us to purchase the items for you, please put monetary donations in the large Mite Box in an envelope marked Personal Care Kits. We will be collecting the following items: lightweight, dark colored bath towels, bath size bars of soap, adult size toothbrushes, metal nail clippers, sturdy combs. The kits will be assembled and boxed on September 11 at 9:30 am.

Many blessings and much joy to you all in Christ our life.
