*The Trinity Torch E-News*
*+ THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY +*
*July 16, 2023*
*Why?*

*Why does the church have stained-glass windows?*

Much of what passes for “stained glass” these days is actually painted glass, but it generally provides a similar effect, which is threefold. First, it provides an image to look at in a window, something on which to feast the eyes while in church. This is a good thing, because there ought to be plenty of things to look at while at worship. A church which has little or nothing to look at is not taking advantage of one of the two most prominent senses God has given us. St. Paul encourages attention to things of beauty: “Whatsoever things are lovely . . . think on these things” (Phil. 4:8). To fill the eyes with beautiful things at worship is to remind the faithful of the temple whose gate was called “Beautiful” (Acts 3:2), and that in turn reminds them that God Himself is the author of beauty. Moreover, this sense of beauty serves to remind the faithful of the beauty of the incarnation of God. Christ has become flesh, and so has adorned the earth with His own eternal beauty. Should we not therefore attend to what is beautiful?
Secondly, the images portrayed in stained-glass windows are generally images from the Gospel, and thus the maxim comes to mind: “A picture is worth a thousand words.” To see an image of Jesus the Good Shepherd, or of Jesus healing someone, or of the resurrected Christ hailing Mary is to bring immediately to mind the most precious truths which give rise to these images; and so the Word of God, as pondered in the heart, has good effect.
Third, the use of light filtered through colored glass provides an effect which is very uncommon anywhere else in the world. Churches still have pretty much of a corner on the market for stained-glass windows, and so the message stands out – a message unspoken yet unmistakable – that this place is unlike any other place in the world. This is where heaven and earth meet (through Christ who is preached and administered here), where He who is the light of the world is shed abroad in our hearts. How fitting, then, that as sunlight is filtered through those windows, so the almighty God is “filtered” to us through His gracious word of life.

Trinity Torch E-news Trinity 5 July 9

*The Trinity Torch E-News*
*+ THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY +*
*July 9, 2023*
*Why?*

*Why is church music so different from all other kinds of music?*

The music of the Church’s liturgy is very ancient in character, but that is not the chief reason it is so different. Rather, it is that the life of the Church is also very different from the life of this world. So the chanting of the words of the liturgy provides an instinctive awareness that here something is taking place which we do not find anywhere in the world. This is a different world, the world of faith and the Holy Ghost. Actually this way of singing, a way foreign to the ways of this world, arises out of the very Word of God. For the parts of the liturgy which we sing are generally portions of psalms. Most of the psalms came from King David, and David himself sang them when they first came forth. How did they sound when he sang them? We don’t exactly know, of course, but we do know that when St. Gregory the Great, in about the year A.D. 600 arranged for the compiling of the ancient psalm tones, he compiled the materials already well established in use, which had been taken over from the old synagogue. Thus the Gregorian psalm tones were based on earlier tones, and therefore it is quite likely that the way in which we chant the liturgy today, if it is Gregorian in style, sounds very similar to the way the words sounded when David first uttered them (except for the fact that he sang in Hebrew). Therefore the music of the liturgy does indeed come from another world: the world of the ancients, the world of David, the world of Christ, the world of the kingdom of heaven.

Rev. Dr. Adam Filipek, of Holy Cross and Immanuel Lutheran Churches, Lidgerwood, ND, has written a book for CPH that is now available. Life in Christ: Rooted, Woven, and Grafted into God’s Story provides a great walkthrough and overview of the Bible, the six chief parts of the catechism in their biblical contexts, the Sunday Divine Service, the Christian life, and even heaven and hell. The goal of the book is to increase biblical literacy and to cultivate a love of the one true God and a desire to dwell with Him through Word and Sacrament. This narrative approach increases biblical literacy, a love of liturgy, a deeper understanding of vocation, and a yearning for Christ’s return.

Trinity E-news (Trinity 2 June 18)

*The Trinity Torch E-News*
*+ THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY +*
*June 18, 2023*
*THERE WILL BE NO TRINITY TORCH E-NEWS FOR THE NEXT TWO FRIDAYS *
*PASTOR FILIPEK WILL BE ON VACATION (June 19 – July 2)*
*Why?*

*Why is there an eternal light in the sanctuary?*

The eternal light is the candle that hangs from the ceiling of the chancel, on the Gospel side. It is always lit. According to ancient custom, the eternal light signifies not only the light of Christ, as does any candle in the church, but also the fact that there are somewhere in its proximity the reserved elements of the Holy Sacrament. These are called reliquae, the fragments that remain (St. Matt. 14:20) following the celebration of the Sacrament. These are set aside for use when the pastor visits the sick and shut-ins. What remains of these by the next Mass are used therein. Yet they are kept separate from what has not yet been consecrated, until after the Words of Institution have been spoken. This is in accord with the maxim of Acts 10:15: “What God has cleansed you must not call common.”

Proverbs 9:1–10
1 John 3:13–18
Luke 14:15–24
*The Gospel Call Goes Out to All*
Wisdom has issued an invitation to the divine feast: “Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight” (Prov. 9:5–6). This is the call of the Spirit of Christ to believe the Gospel and to receive His saving gifts in the Holy Supper. Many make excuses and reject this invitation, even as the Jews did in the days of Jesus, yet the Master’s house will be filled. The Gospel call therefore goes out to the lowly and despised, into the highways, even to all the Gentiles (Luke 14:15–24). For “you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ” (Eph. 2:13–22). In Christ, believing Jews and Gentiles are no longer strangers but fellow members of the household of God. The enmity of class and race is put to death through the cross. Having been reconciled in the one Body of Christ, we are enabled to love one another (1 John 3:13–18) as we await the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom which will have no end.
