Weekly Update for Grace & Trinity

20 August 2021
*Commemoration of Samuel*

Dear Saints and Friends of Grace & Trinity,

This Sunday is
*The 12th Sunday after Trinity*
T the Sunday of the Deaf Mute T
Isaiah 29:17-24; 2 Corinthians 3:4-11; Mark 7:31-37 <www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isaiah+29%3A17-24%3B+2+Corinthians+3%3A4-11%3B+Mark+7%3A31-37&version=ESV>

*Faith Comes from Hearing*
*A man who was deaf and therefore also had an impediment in his speech was brought to Jesus (Mark 7:31–37). In the same way, all are by nature deaf toward God and therefore also unable to confess the faith rightly. For “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Rom. 10:9–17). Jesus put His fingers into the man’s ears, and He spat and touched His tongue. Even so in Holy Baptism, water sanctified by the words of Jesus’ mouth is applied to us; and the finger of God, that is, the life–giving Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 3:4–11) is put into our ears in the hearing of the baptismal Gospel. Jesus’ sighing “Ephphatha” opened the man’s ears, and his tongue was loosed to speak plainly as Isaiah prophesied of the Messiah, “In that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book” (Is. 29:18–24) So also, He who sighed and breathed His last on the cross for us has given us to hear and believe in Him and has opened our lips that our mouths may declare His praise.*

Join us for the *Divine Service* at *Grace* at *8am* or *Trinity *at *11am* and for *Bible study* at *9:30am* *at Grace. *For Bible Study, we’ll review the Ordination service and the Scripture that puts a man into the Office of the Holy Ministry.

Weekly Update for Grace & Trinity

13 August 2021
*Friday of Trinity 10*

Dear Saints and Friends of Grace & Trinity,

This Sunday is
*the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, **Theotokos*
Isaiah 61:7–11; Galatians 4:4-7; Luke 1:39-55 <www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Isaiah+61%3A7%E2%80%9311%3B+Galatians+4%3A4-7%3B+Luke+1%3A39-55&version=ESV>

*St. Mary, The Mother of God (**Theotokos**)*
*St. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is mentioned repeatedly in the Gospels and the Book of Acts, with nearly a dozen specific incidents in her life being recorded: her betrothal to Joseph; the annunciation by the angel Gabriel that she was to be the mother of the Messiah; her visitation to Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptizer; the nativity of our Lord, the visits of the shepherds and the Wise Men; the presentation of the infant Jesus in the temple; the flight into Egypt; the Passover visit to Jerusalem when Jesus was twelve; the wedding at Cana in Galilee; her presence at the crucifixion, when her Son commended her to the care of His disciple John; and her gathering with the apostles in the Upper Room after the ascension, waiting for the promised Holy Spirit. Thus she is present at most of the important events in her Son’s life. She is especially remembered and honored for her unconditional obedience to the will of God (“Let it be to me according to Your word” [Luke 1:38]); for her loyalty to her Son even when she did not understand Him (“Do whatever He tells you” [John 2:1-11]); and above all for the highest honor that heaven bestowed on her of being the mother of our Lord (“Blessed are you among women”[Luke 1:42]). According to tradition, Mary went with the apostle John to Ephesus, where she died.** Treasury of Daily Prayer, 625*

Weekly Update for Grace & Trinity

6 August 2021
*Friday of Trinity 9*

Dear Saints and Friends of Grace & Trinity,

This Sunday is
*the 10th Sunday after Trinity*
T the Sunday of the Cleansing of the Temple T
Jeremiah 8:4-12; 1 Corinthians 12:1-11; Luke 19:41-48 <www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jeremiah+8%3A4-12%3B+1+Corinthians+12%3A1-11%3B+Luke+19%3A41-48&version=ESV>

*Jesus Weeps for Jerusalem*
*Our Lord wept over Jerusalem for the destruction that would soon come upon her. For she did not recognize the time of God’s visitation in Christ, who had come to bring her peace (Luke 19:41–48). Through His prophets God had consistently called His people to turn from their deceit and false worship. “But My people do not know the judgments of the Lord” (Jer. 8:4–12). They sought to establish their own righteousness rather than receive Christ’s righteousness through faith (Rom. 9:30–10:4). So it was that God was in His temple to cleanse it, a precursor to the once-for-all cleansing from sin which He would accomplish in the temple of His own body on the cross. God grant us to know the things that make for our peace—His visitation in the Word and Sacraments—that by the Holy Spirit we may penitently confess “Jesus is Lord” (1 Cor. 12:1–11).*
