Weekly Update for Grace & Trinity

29 May 2021
*Ember Saturday of Pentecost*

Dear Saints and Friends of Grace & Trinity,

This Sunday is
T* the Festival of the Holy Trinity *T
Isaiah 6:1–7; Romans 11:33–36; John 3:1–17 <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=13149685&l=92449df3-88f1-4d93-bc81-529883850ece&r=d7db1303-f73f-486a-a3e6-42b02efd0ad5>

*Ember Days – *“The Ember Days comprise the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday of the week following the first Sunday in Lent (Invocabit); the week between Pentecost and Trinity Sunday; the week following the Feast of the Holy Cross (September 14); and the week following the Commemoration of St. Lucia (December 13). Traditionally, the Western Church observed four periods, roughly one for each of the natural seasons of the year, seeking God’s blessings upon the fruits of the earth and acknowledging that all food comes from Him. Fasting, prayer, and almsgiving as prescribed by the Church marked the three days of each Embertide. In the Church of the Reformation, these days marked a season of piety especially devoted to preaching on the catechism. Today the Ember Days can be a time to give special attention to the elements and fundamentals of Christian knowledge and life found in the catechism. The Ember Days were originally days of prayer, repentance, and fasting. After the Reformation, the Ember Days themselves became for Lutherans one of the roots of the evangelical ‘days of repentance.’ The traditional themes of repentance can be used in one’s daily prayer in a way that is already familiar, as a Day of Supplication and Prayer. Hymns of confession and absolution would be suitable. The appointed *lectio continua *readings of daily prayer are retained. In prayers, it would be fitting of the days to ask to be forgiven of guilt, to be spared from punishment, and to pray the Collect for Peace.” – *Treasury of Daily Prayer, *21

*Tomorrow *the Church celebrates the Festival of the Holy Trinity. It’s a bit of an odd feast, commemorating who God is in the mystery of His identity, rather than a particular act of His incarnate life. As such, it draws us into contemplation and wonder, while also strengthening our faith and love. As is our custom, we’ll recite the Athanasian Creed during the service as our Gradual. You can hear a bit about the Athanasian Creed here <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=13149685&l=c2bd4453-6aa8-40cf-ad5d-61236f319cde&r=d7db1303-f73f-486a-a3e6-42b02efd0ad5> .

*Also, it’s Joint-Parish Sunday! *Join us at *Trinity *for *Bible study* at *9:30am* and *Divine Service* *at 11am* to thank, praise, serve, and obey the Blessed, Holy Trinity. Then, please join us for a Pot-Luck after the service. Bring something to share!

· *June 2-5 *~ 4th Annual EDI Florovsky-Newman Week. I can’t express enough how important this sort of ecumenical dialogue is for the life of the Church. Please don’t be frightened by the “academic” character of the event—I guarantee that you will be blessed by the presentations and the discussion that follows. Please CLICK HERE <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=13149685&l=fd56e180-4e90-4b97-a1ff-7209e3f0a6b9&r=d7db1303-f73f-486a-a3e6-42b02efd0ad5> and register for the event—we’re more concerned to get folks there than we are for how much you’re able to pay. That’s how important these conversations are. Plus, if you register for the banquet, let me know—I’ll try to set aside a table or two for us.
· *Summer Schedule: *For June and July we’ll not have Wednesday Bible Study, Divine Service, or youth Catechesis.
· *Vacation:* As usual, I’ll be taking the family up to MI for the Summer. I’ll be gone 6/8-18. If there is any need during that time, please contact Pastor Metzger.

*Other things…*

Might we have several families willing to house some of this group for a night *Monday, July 26*, and possibly give a quick breakfast before they leave early morning *Tuesday, July 27th*? They’d arrive in Wichita on Monday, sometime 9-11pm and leave Tuesday around 5:30-6am. They’ll have one adult male (Pr. Egger), one HS boy, two adult women, eight HS girls. They can divide into homes however is most convenient. Please let me know if you can help with this!

Weekly Update for Grace & Trinity

21 May 2021
*Commemoration of Constantine and his mother, Helena,*

Alleluia! Christ is risen!
Dear Saints and Friends of Grace & Trinity,

This Sunday is
T* the Feast of Pentecost *T
Genesis 11:1-9; Acts 2:1-21; John 14:23-31 <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=12994647&l=9190ea33-4cc8-41e9-9b0f-ce9eee66d1e0&r=b3909e2f-9c4f-4a13-9a7a-36dc2a024883>

*Today *the Church commemorates Constantine and Helena. Constantine I served as Roman Emperor from A.D. 306 to 337. During his reign the persecution of Christians was forbidden by the Edict of Milan in 312, and ultimately the faith gained full imperial support. Constantine took an active interest in the life and teachings of the church and called the Council of Nicaea in 325 at which orthodox Christianity was defined and defended. His mother, Helena (ca. 255-329), strongly influenced Constantine. Her great interest in locating the holy sites of the Christian faith led her to become one of the first Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land. Her research led to the identification of Biblical locations in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and beyond, which are still maintained as places of worship today.

*Tomorrow *the Church begins her celebration of the Feast of Pentecost with a *Vigil Vespers* service at *Trinity at 5:30pm*. Immediately following the Vespers, we will examine our two confirmands in the faith. This examination is NOT a test like they might take in school (*it is finals week after all…*). No, there are no grades at this exam, no partial credits given, no placements depending on how well they do. This examination is an opportunity for these two saints of God to testify to the hope within them. It’s an opportunity to say back to God what He has said and revealed of Himself. They will express the faith that they’ve been taught according to the Small Catechism and speak of their desire to receive the Holy Things of God—chief of which are His Body and His Blood. Please come and encourage Ben and Sophia in this confession of which we all share.

*This Sunday *is the Feast of Pentecost, which celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles, who proclaim Christ and Him crucified for the life of the world. *Join us at Grace at 8am and Trinity at 11am* to receive the Spirit through the continuation of the Apostolic ministry and give thanks and praise to God for His mighty works among us.

*Bible Study* this week is at *Trinity* at 9:30am. We’re completing Revelation 19 and moving into chapter 20. Join us!

Weekly Update for Grace & Trinity

14 May 2021
*Friday after the Ascension of Our Lord,*

Alleluia! Christ is risen!
Dear Saints and Friends of Grace & Trinity,

This Sunday is
T* Exaudi *T
Ezekiel 36:22-28; 1 Peter 4:7-14; John 15:26-16:4 <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=12860863&l=37f1f41d-f663-4b16-a924-1f442262ee2d&r=10dfdaf7-8d8a-47e3-8617-41b326a16dc8>

*Yesterday* was the Feast of the Ascension of our Lord. There we saw our Lord crowned and seated at the right hand of the Father. That does NOT mean, however, that He’s now located somewhere *away *or *apart *from us. The right hand of the Father is the power of God, wherever He is doing His saving work. So now, Jesus—with *both* flesh *and* divinity—is with us always, always at work forgiving our sin, comforting us in our weakness, and drawing us into His immortality. It’s His ascension that gives us the confidence to call upon Him now, trusting that He will hear us, be gracious to us, and answer us. And it’s from His ascension to the right hand of the Father that He sends His Holy Spirit, to strengthen our faith, and keep us unto life-everlasting. *Join us this Sunday at Grace at 8am and Trinity at 11am* to receive the Spirit and the new life He gives and works within us.

Bible Study this week is at *Trinity* at 9:30am. We’ll continue with Revelation 19.

· *We received a request for hospitality: *high schoolers from Iowa are on their way to Higher Things, traveling to Austin, TX.
· *NEW MEMBER CATECHESIS*: Every Monday, from 6-7:30pm, we meet at Trinity for a class on what we believe, teach, and confess as Lutherans, particularly as it is prayed in the Sunday Liturgy. Please invite any family or friends—and come yourself for a refresher! There’s no obligation to join the church after the class, but for those desiring to do so, this is an opportunity. If you’ve already missed a class or two, no worries! Join us!
· *Here’s your opportunity to participate in the LWML National Convention in Lexington, KY.
