Weekly Update for Grace & Trinity

5 March 2021
*Friday of Reminiscere*

Dear Saints and Friends of Grace & Trinity,

This Sunday is the Third Sunday in Lent
T* Oculi *T
Exodus 8:16-24; Ephesians 5:1-9; Luke 11:14-28 <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=11576869&l=de746f74-abb0-4871-af35-e1575800300e&r=afd6e9de-aa83-409c-bc16-13b84a1aaa6f>

Jesus is accused of doing evil when in fact He is doing good. He casts out a demon from a mute man so that he is able to speak (Luke 11:14–28). But some said Jesus did this by the power of Beelzebub, Satan. Like Pharaoh of old, their hearts were hard (Ex. 8:16–24). They did not recognize the finger of God, the power of the Holy Spirit at work in and through Jesus. Jesus is the Stronger Man who overcomes the strong man. He takes the devil’s armor of sin and death and destroys it from the inside out by the holy cross. He exorcizes and frees us by water and the Word. We were once darkness, but now we are light in Christ the Lord (Eph. 5:1–9). As children of light, our tongues are loosed to give thanks to Him who saved us. *Join us at 8am at Grace and 11am at Trinity, as we rejoice in the victory won for us by the Stronger Man, Jesus Christ.*

*Bible Study this week is at 9:30am at Trinity. *This week we’ll pick back up with Revelation 16. Join us!

Weekly Update for Grace & Trinity

26 February 2021
*Friday of Invocabit*

Dear Saints and Friends of Grace & Trinity,

This Sunday is the Second Sunday in Lent
T* Reminiscere *T
Genesis 32:22-32; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-7; Matthew 15:21-28 <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=11448848&l=8179ee5d-22e6-4d84-bf26-339f7eb61ce0&r=6f132318-d431-4a80-864c-ada9ada48354>

Holding God to His word: Jacob wrestled with God; he would not let Him go until he received a blessing from Him (Gen. 32:22–32). So it was with the Canaanite woman. Though Jesus seemed to ignore and reject her, she continued to call upon His name and look to Him for help (Mt. 15:21–28). Even when the Lord called her a little dog, she held on to Him in faith and would not let Him wriggle out of His words: “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” This Gentile woman shows herself to be a true Israelite, who struggles with God and man in Christ and prevails. “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire” (Mt. 15:27–28). This is the sanctifying will of God (1 Thess. 4:1–7)—to test your faith in order that it may be refined and strengthened. For tribulation produces perseverance; perseverance, character; character, hope. And hope in Christ does not disappoint (Rom. 5:1–5). *Join us at 8am at Grace and 11am at Trinity, looking to the Lord our Master for any crumbs that may fall for us.*

*Bible Study this week is at 9:30am at Grace. *This week we’ll pick back up with Revelation 15. Join us!

The letter to the Hebrews says, “*For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin*” (Heb 4:15). This Sunday we begin our Lenten journey focused on this High Priest who is tempted by Satan as we are, yet He remains without sin for us. While He does offer us an example of refuting Satan’s lies with the clear word of God, He does much more than that. He is “*the Prince of life, who died*,” and yet “*reigns immortal!*” (LSB 460:1). He is the victor over sin, death, and the devil. Thanks be to God! *Join us at 8am at Grace and 11am at Trinity to see the beginning of this “combat stupendous” that ends on the cross.*

*Bible Study this week is at 9:30am at Grace. *This week we’ll take a look at some of the Lenten practices and disciplines that Christians adopt both at home and at church. Join us!

*Other things…*
· *Lenten Disciplines… (We’ll discuss these in Bible Class on Sunday)*
o *Fasting*: here’s a helpful handout on fasting <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=11324835&l=6f904a74-5e83-4416-8527-2c9cdf6cd0c4&r=02e0fe90-5f64-4227-942f-927062d04cce> with loads of Scripture explaining some of the thought behind this.
o *Prayer*: of course, we always pray; however, there is an increased devotion to prayer during Lent, which is why we offer Wednesday evening Vespers services at Grace at 7pm. I’d also invite you to join us for Matins daily at Grace at 9am. During Lent we use this litany <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=11324835&l=ff3b3200-eba4-42b6-a61b-ace50c5f69e0&r=02e0fe90-5f64-4227-942f-927062d04cce>, which you might enjoy making use of at home.
o *Almsgiving*: an increase in generosity during this season—especially for the poor—is an excellent way to prepare ourselves for the cross and resurrection of Jesus. Our midweek offerings will support our Seminarian, Kyle Nelson.
o *Confession & Absolution*: while we confess our sins in a general way every time we pray the Lord’s Prayer, as well as at the beginning of each of our Sunday liturgies, there is also the gift of Private (Individual) Confession and Absolution. This is offered every Friday at Trinity from 4-5pm as well as on Wednesdays at Grace from 6-6:45pm.
o Also, our Lenten custom is to have a light meal prior to our Wednesday night Vespers services. These meals will be at Grace at 6pm.
· Here’s this week’s lecture on Joel, Obadiah, Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=11324835&l=b619f58c-6c75-498a-9fd1-057a09bf7dd7&r=02e0fe90-5f64-4227-942f-927062d04cce>, as well as last week’s lecture on Hosea and Amos <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=11324835&l=330bab5b-a36b-424c-9e00-67f74aae2076&r=02e0fe90-5f64-4227-942f-927062d04cce>, which is MUCH longer than I actually lectured, but includes portions of my previous writing on these two prophets. Enjoy!
· *From the District….*
o Here’s A Thank You to our Kansas Congregations <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=11324835&l=42a7dea1-4bad-46b5-8095-2ea9b6b8eb09&r=02e0fe90-5f64-4227-942f-927062d04cce> and A Pastoral Statement on Coming Back to Church <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=11324835&l=0078186b-d5db-44c0-a178-bd11931eb6d9&r=02e0fe90-5f64-4227-942f-927062d04cce> from President Panzer.
o President Panzer and the Kansas District are rolling out another “Together We Pray” campaign with 50 days of verses and prayers for Lent and Easter. The prayers begin on Ash Wednesday, February 17 (in conjunction with the Kansas District Day of Repentance wherein everyone is encouraged to pray the Litany <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=11324835&l=e2c78389-8d74-4e3f-a2ab-d5b9234a8997&r=02e0fe90-5f64-4227-942f-927062d04cce> sometime during the day) and run through April 7. If you’re on Facebook, you can find the prayers on the Kansas District page <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=11324835&l=f2a28490-34d2-4103-acef-e053a853acf2&r=02e0fe90-5f64-4227-942f-927062d04cce>. Take a minute or two each day to join your fellow Kansans in prayer, with the confidence that He will hear us!

*Prayer Requests…*
· Debra Engelbrecht’s surgery this last week went well, successfully removing the tumor. She was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday. Continued prayers for recovery are appreciated.

Thank you all for your prayers while we were gone. We had an excellent vacation as a family–thank you! It’s very good to be back (despite the cold weather!). I look forward to seeing you all Sunday, if not sooner.
Many blessings and much joy to you all in Christ our life.
