Weekly Update for Grace & Trinity

15 January 2021
*Friday after the Baptism of Our Lord*

Dear Saints and Friends of Grace & Trinity,

This Sunday is
T* The Second Sunday after the Epiphany* T
Exodus 33:12-23; Romans 12:6-16; John 2:1-11 <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=10689970&l=8e78293f-921b-4951-88db-740f9165323b&r=b69ca4c8-feba-43ed-8935-3e1290d14330>

The first “sign” Jesus gives in John’s Gospel takes place at the wedding feast of Cana. There He becomes Host and turns water into wine so that the feast may go on. This “sign” reveals something about our Lord—something about water and wine, about His hour and authority, and about His joy over humanity. *Join us at 8am at Grace and 11am at Trinity for another epiphany of who our God is for us in Christ.*

*Bible Study is at 9:30am at Trinity. *We’re in chapter 12 of the Revelation of St. John. Please join us!

*Other things…*
· The KS District has asked us to contact our legislators regarding the Value Them Both amendment, which is a strong pro-life attempt to defend the most vulnerable among us. See here for more details.
· I was on KFUO radio the other day, talking about reading the OT with the Church Fathers. It’s about a half an hour and you can listen here <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=10689970&l=41bdc808-5323-476e-a6a8-2134c352cf58&r=b69ca4c8-feba-43ed-8935-3e1290d14330> .
o Speaking of which, the fourth article in the series is now out <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=10689970&l=690226e7-c448-4c5e-9a85-7b54646c649e&r=b69ca4c8-feba-43ed-8935-3e1290d14330>. It’s on the resurrection in Job with St. Gregory the Great.
· The Seminary faculty at St. Catharine’s, Ontario put together a well-written theological response to Covid and the life of the Church. You can read it here <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=10689970&l=8bdb661e-0231-4514-9e52-f9c5c7bd7693&r=b69ca4c8-feba-43ed-8935-3e1290d14330>. I especially appreciated the way it spoke of the Church as a family and what that truly implies, as well as the question about the virtue of the virtual.
· Yesterday was the first class of the semester for the course on the Prophets that I’m teaching to the seminarians in the Dominican Republic. I have two students in Chile and the rest are in the D.R. Yesterday went much better than I thought it would—thank God! For those interested, here’s an English draft of the lecture I gave <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=10689970&l=67fc2746-65da-4762-ad6b-954583df6a92&r=b69ca4c8-feba-43ed-8935-3e1290d14330> (in Spanish). There were a number of things refined, altered, etc. when I translated it, but for the most part, this will give an idea of what was taught.

*Prayer Requests…*
· Leah, Kendall Patterson’s sister, who is hospitalized.
· The Smith family—all four: Scott, Rachel, Caroline, and Ben have tested positive for Covid. They’re fevering and ache-y. Keep them in your prayers.

Many blessings and much joy to you all in Christ our life.

Two brief updates for Grace & Trinity

Dear Saints at Grace & Trinity,

Please forgive the late notice here, but I wanted to alert you to two items:
1) While Trinity was honored to be asked to host the annual Eighth Day Institute Symposium this weekend, it turns out that, due to a large number of Covid infections within the Eighth Day community, we needed to cancel the live-gathering of the Symposium. In the next week or two there will be robust digital content that addresses the theme of Hope in an Age of Anxiety. Please check www.eighthdayinstitute.org <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=10675380&l=9454cf52-bce6-4384-beb9-d8c3964ac099&r=bf7098e9-eaa5-4069-b26d-202804087bcf> for more details.
2) The third annual Kansas District Life Conference is right around the corner! The event (Jan 22) begins with check-in at 9 a.m., followed by Matins at 9:30. The keynote speaker will be Rev. Dr. Peter Scaer, professor and chair of the Exegetical Department at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne (CTSFW). Dr. Scaer will be giving two presentations, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. A schedule <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=10675380&l=8c48af56-3c0c-4605-b407-58c3a247f722&r=bf7098e9-eaa5-4069-b26d-202804087bcf> is available on the event page. Weekly Update for Grace & Trinity

8 January 2021
*Friday after the Epiphany*

Dear Saints and Friends of Grace & Trinity,

This Sunday is
T* The Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord* T
Joshua 3:1-3, 7-8, 13-17; 1 Corinthians 1:26-31; Matthew 3:13-17 <ec2-52-26-194-35.us-west-2.compute.amazonaws.com/x/d?c=10573087&l=572f93f3-7aa3-4fab-8a87-2ad819d732fa&r=ca0544db-a224-46b1-ada1-d6516a8fd03c>

What goes for Jesus goes for all of us who are baptized into Him—cross and resurrection. The Baptism of Jesus, however, also reminds us that what goes for us also goes for Him. This is the great Epiphany: God takes what is ours and gives us what’s His—and in so doing, “fulfills all righteousness” (Mt 3:15). *Join us at 8am at Grace and 11am at Trinity for the regular gathering of the baptized around Jesus and the gifts He gives.*
