Weekly Update for Grace & Trinity

21 August 2020
*Friday of Trinity 10*

Dear Saints and Friends of Grace & Trinity,

*SUNDAY – TRINITY 11*
T the Sunday of the Pharisee & the Publican T
Gen 4.1-15, 1 Cor 15.1-10, Lk 18.9-14 <www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Gen+4.1-15%2C+1+Cor+15.1-10%2C+Lk+18.9-14&version=ESV>
<www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Gen+4.1-15%2C+1+Cor+15.1-10%2C+Lk+18.9-14&version=ESV>
There’s no beating around the bush with Jesus. Our Gospel this Sunday begins: “*[Jesus] also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt*” (Lk 8:9). Three things stand out: 1) that some trust in themselves; 2) that their righteousness comes from what *they *do; and 3) that this leads to treating others with contempt. We love to use this parable *against *others, thus finding ourselves guilty of all three. Let’s not do that…And yet, when Jesus uses the parable that follows of the pharisee and the publican, He does so as the one who uniquely *is *righteous and who comes to give His righteousness to us. And so we pray in the collect: “*Almighty and everlasting God, always more ready to hear than we to pray and to give more than we either desire or deserve, pour down upon us the abundance of Your mercy, forgiving those things of which our conscience is afraid and giving us those good things that we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Christ, our Lord*.”

Also this Sunday, I’m deeply honored to be remembered for 10 years of ministry in the Lord’s stead and by His command to you, the saints at Grace and Trinity. Pastor Warren Graff will preach for the service and, without doubt, will call us to the merciful gifts that our Lord continues to give.
*J**oin us this Sunday at 11am at Trinity for the service and stick around for a meal following! (This is a Joint-Parish Sunday; thus, there will only be one service.)*

*Bible Study is at 9:30am at *Trinity*. *We’ll review the Office of the Holy Ministry as found in the Ordination Rite <mcusercontent.com/a90ee03ff0810e6c55bae6a58/files/2b15dc49-7975-4ebc-a101-f2e1442ba6dc/Qualifications_for_the_Office_of_the_Holy_Ministry_and_Vows.pdf>, along with the vows I’ve taken as the servant of the Word in this place. Please join us!

· We’ve been working our way through Revelation (slowly) in Bible Class on Sundays. Two weeks ago we discussed chapters 2-3, which includes the letters specifically addressing the 7 churches. Here’s a short video by Peter Leithart , a noted scholar and head of the Theopolis Institute, on that portion of Revelation.
· We’ll re-start the Marriage & Family Class in September, *not Aug 25th as previously noted*.
· The 4th Annual Lutheran Men’s Retreat <www.gracelutheranchurch-wichita.org/defendingboyhood.html> is coming up next month, Sept 18-19 at the Herington Retreat Center. Register now. Pick up your book from me. See you there!
· Trinity Members: please remember to fill out the ballot on the back of the special newsletter sent out a couple weeks ago and return it before Aug. 30th. This was in lieu of our regular voters’ meeting.
· The Kansas District is beginning a Prayer Campaign: “Together We Pray”. The pandemic has tried to make social distancing and going it alone the ‘new normal.’ Here’s an opportunity to buck that trend. On September 1, the Kansas District is kicking off a 90-day prayer campaign, “Together We Pray,” which will include daily scripture verses and prayers through November 29, the first Sunday in Advent. If you’re on Facebook, you can find the prayers on the Kansas District page. You can also find a booklet with all the prayers on the Kansas District website (kslcms.org), available August 31. Take a minute or two each day to join your fellow Kansans in prayer, with the confidence that He will hear us!
o Also, here’s a sneak-peek at the upcoming KS District insert in the *Lutheran Witness* for next month that describes this further.
Many blessings and much joy to you all in Christ our life,
-Pastor

Dear Saints and Friends of Grace & Trinity,

As Jesus draws near to Jerusalem, He laments their lack of faith. He pleads with them to recognize the day of the Lord’s visitation and prophesies their destruction. Then He cleanses the temple. This Sunday we’ll consider what this cleansing means for Jerusalem and what it means for us. *J**oin us in the house of prayer Sunday at 8am at Grace and 11am at Trinity! *

*Bible Study is at 9:30am at Grace between the services. *We’ll continue our study of the Revelation of St. John, chapter 4—you might read chapters 4-5 ahead of time and begin pondering the imagery of the vision.

*Other things…*
· Here’s a great article <medium.com/@lkatherinebaker/a-pandemic-observed-7cb5c90aa17b> by a friend of mine that reflects on life in the midst of death, particularly helpful during this time of crisis. Here’s a brief excerpt:
“*In our fear of death we simply do not want to think about what happens after our loved ones die. But we must. We seem to be willing, in our understandable terror, to trade away many essential things: basic freedoms, our public life and public institutions for the promise of greater safety from sickness and death, but when that sickness and death come anyway (as it must), what will we do when we find we have made the world worse than it otherwise might have been? If we trade the beauty and order of our society for safety, not only will we find we have lost our dear ones anyway, we will sit and mourn them in a desolate land of our own making.*”
· The 4th Annual Lutheran Men’s Retreat <www.gracelutheranchurch-wichita.org/defendingboyhood.html> is coming up next month, Sept 18-19 at the Herington Retreat Center. If you’ve never been, you won’t want to miss out. We’ll be discussing Anthony Esolen’s book *Defending Boyhood*, which is an incredible case for urging boys to be boys, and in so doing, training them to be men. Registration is $35, which covers lodging and food, as well as a copy of the book. RSVP to me (e-mail, text, or call). Checks made payable to Trinity with “Men’s Retreat” in the memo. Space is limited to 30.
· On *August 25th* from *7-8:30pm* we’ll be starting again (and anew) the Marriage & Family Class *at Trinity*. We’ll be starting a new book, so if you’re looking to join, now is a great time!
· I’m still looking for someone willing to live-stream the service at Trinity. If you’re willing, let me know. Thanks!
· If anyone is looking for some volunteer opportunities, I was approached about a need for helping with Angels Care Hospice. Here’s the info.
· If you’re not already subscribed to Eighth Day Institute’s *Digital Synaxis*, <eighthdayinstitute.lpages.co/daily-synaxis-email-sign-up/> a weekly conglomeration of news, theology, culture, and poetry, then you really should. It’s free and full of great insights.

7 August 2020 Friday of Trinity 8

Dear Saints and Friends of Grace & Trinity,

*SUNDAY – TRINITY 9 *
✞ the Sunday of the Unjust Steward ✞
2 Samuel 22:26–34; 1 Corinthians 10:6-13; Luke 16:1-13

Sunday’s Gospel is one of those strange texts. The steward was wasting the master’s possessions. (That’s bad.) He’s called to account and let go. What’s he do next? He can’t do much else in life, so he goes to the clients (apparently no longer with authority to do so) and forgives their debts—some by as much as half! And just when we expect the Master to come full of wrath, He doesn’t. In fact, He *commends *the unjust steward! What’s more: Jesus encourages us to do similarly, “*And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.*” (Lk 16:13) *J**oin us this Sunday at 8am at Grace and 11am at Trinity as we try to make sense of all of this! *

*Bible Study is at 9:30am at Grace between the services. *We’ll continue our study of the Revelation of St. John.

*For those not yet joining us in person*, here is the bulletin for Sunday  to follow along with at home. Please remember to give your offering to the Lord for the service of the Church, either by mailing a check or donating through our PayPal account (Grace, Trinity).
